Rubén Darío estuvo en varias ocasiones en Mallorca, permaneciendo temporadas largas.
En 1906, en que estuvo cuatro meses, estuvo en el Terreno y su casa se convirtió en centro de reunión de políticos, pintores, escritores y periodistas. En 1913 pasó una temporada en la Cartuja de Valldemossa, fue entonces cuando, vestido con hábitos religiosos apareció en una fotografía en el periódico La Almudaina.
En Mallorca, y alguna dedicada a la isla, escribió varias poesías, así como la “Epístola a la señora de Leopoldo Lugones”, el poema “La Isla de Oro” y la novela “El Oro de Mallorca”.

En 1950, el entonces Cónsul de Nicaragua, Antonio Carlos Vidal Isern, solicitó erigir un monumento en memoria de Rubén Darío. La obra se encargó a Antoni Oliver.
Hay unas líneas talladas en la piedra, en mayúsculas, dicen:
“Año MCML
Y que sirvan de polen tus cenizas
en nimbo azul de un florecer humano
salvándose las vallas fronterizas
conversos y con rosas en la mano.
A. Vidal Isern”.

El Teatro es un gran edificio, especialmente desde la perspectiva de las construcciones en Nicaragua. Hay varias salas donde se realizan los eventos. El lobby, que es grande y elegante, sirve como sala de conferencias, para presentaciones de libros, fashion show, pequeños conciertos y exposiciones de arte.
El Salón de los Cristales, en el segundo piso, tomó este nombre debido a la presencia de los dos candelabros de cristal donados por el gobierno de España cuando el Teatro fue inaugurado. Este salón es apto para exposición de pinturas, con paredes oscuras e iluminación especial. El salón tiene una capacidad de 350 a 400 personas y es por eso que también puede ser utilizado para pequeños conciertos y presentaciones.
El Salón Principal, o Sala Mayor, está equipado con 1200 asientos y un gran escenario. Aquí se presentan los principales conciertos y presentaciones. El salón tiene buena acústica y muchos cantantes famosos, actores, bailarines, nacionales e internacionales, han gozado de estas comodidades. Allí hay una platea y tres balcones. Los asientos presidenciales están localizados en el centro del primer balcón.

El Teatro Nacional Rubén Darío se encuentra cerca del antiguo centro de Managua, a pocos metros del Malecón ubicado a orillas del Lago Xolotlán. Para llegar, simplemente puede tomar un taxi y lo llevará al Teatro Nacional. En su propio carro, maneje desde el centro de compras Plaza Inter hacia el lago (siga recto al norte después de pasar la rotonda). La carretera acaba después de unos 3 kilómetros, a las orillas del Lago de Managua; ahí encontrará el Teatro a mano derecha, justo antes del malecón y el fin de la carretera.

INSCRIPCIONES: En la parte inferior de la escultura hay una lira de bronce de pequeñas dimensiones y la inscripción, con mayúsculas “A Rubén Darío”. Bajo esa dedicatoria en bronce, hay unas líneas talladas en la piedra.
En la parte posterior de la obra está el escudo de Mallorca esculpido en la piedra.
