Descripción

Los raros es un libro de Rubén Darío publicado en 1896 que recopila una serie de semblanzas de autores admirados por el poeta nicaragüense. En la primera edición del libro, aparecida en octubre de 1896 en la Tipografía La Vasconia de Buenos Aires, aparecían las semblanzas de diecinueve autores: Leconte de Lisle, Paul Verlaine, Villiers de l’Isle Adam, Léon Bloy, Jean Richepin, Jean Moréas, Rachilde, Teodoro Hannon, Lautréamont, Max Nordau, George d’Esparbés, Augusto de Armas, Laurent Tailhade, Fra Domenico Cavalca, Eduardo Dubus, Edgar Allan Poe, Ibsen, José Martí y Eugénio de Castro. En la segunda edición, impresa en Barcelona en 1905, se añadieron las semblanzas de Camille Mauclair y Paul Adam. La mayoría de los autores son poetas simbolistas franceses, ya que Darío sentía una gran atracción por la literatura francesa de finales de siglo. Solo hay dos autores hispanoamericanos, los cubanos Augusto de Armas y José Martí, el primero de los cuales escribió sin embargo su obra en francés.

El título.
Lo fatal, alude a la angustia que experimenta el yo poético ante la existencia y lo ineludible de la muerte (“el espanto seguro de estar mañana muerto”); la condición consciente del ser humano que no puede evitar el sufrimiento que produce esta certeza (“ no hay dolor más grande que el dolor de ser vivo/ni mayor pesadumbre que la vida consciente”).

El yo poético es un ser reflexivo que toma como objeto lírico un problema existencial del ser humano, la incertidumbre de su origen y su futuro, por ello el tono del poema expresa una actitud y sentimiento profundamente pesimista sobre el continuo dolor en la vida del hombre.

El tema de este poema es la reflexión angustiada sobre el sentido de la vida humana, en contraste con la certeza de la muerte. Debemos observar que dicha palabra se repite dos veces en el verso 3, y en el verso 4 se refuerza la idea dolorosa con el término “pesadumbre”. Otro tema que aborda el poema es que el ser humano desconoce su origen y futuro; y esto lo
pone en desventaja con respecto a los seres inanimados.

El poema posee una estructura métrica parecida a las de la métrica clásica pero con aportes de la renovación modernista. Consta de tres estrofas. Las dos primeras son serventesios de versos alejandrinos (14 sílabas) divididos en dos hemistiquios de 7 sílabas cada uno, que se comportan como versos independientes (si un hemistiquio termina en aguda o en esdrújula, se le suma o resta 1 sílaba sin tener en cuenta el conteo total), por eso el primer verso consta de 14 sílabas.

En cuanto a la estructura interna el poema tiene una estructura argumentativa en la que presenta el tema de la angustia existencial del hombre de modo tal que la primera estrofa es la introducción al tema, la segunda y los tres primeros versos de la tercera su desarrollo y los dos versos finales su conclusión o cierre.
