Aún sin cumplir los 40 años, Darío comenzó a sentirse envejecido. Su mismo aspecto físico delataba los excesos de su bohemia. No es entonces extraño que su estado anímico se reflejara en sus poemas de esa época, impregnados de recuerdos de un pasado que le parecía perdido y lejano. Los recuerdos de su infancia, de su patria pequeña y distante, más la dolorosa experiencia vital que fue siempre su errabunda existencia, afloran en su poesía.
Dominado por la convicción de que se encontraba viviendo una vejez prematura, Darío da a la estampa las composiciones que integran su pequeño libro, de menos de cien páginas, que lleva por título Poema del Otoño y otros poemas. Fue publicado en 1910, como parte de la Biblioteca Ateneo de Madrid, que dirigía el buen amigo de Rubén, Mariano Miguel de Val, a quien está dedicado el libro. De Val auxilió a Darío en momentos difíciles, como cuando le cedió gratuitamente un local de la Calle Serrano para que pudiera instalar allí la Legación de Nicaragua, en momentos en que Darío dejó de recibir las correspondientes asignaciones del gobierno de Nicaragua.

“El oro de Mallorca” cuyos capítulos no fueron titulados, aunque sí fechados. El primero de éstos, un prólogo, nos sitúa en el único escenario en el que transcurre la novela: Mallorca, al mismo tiempo, el narrador nos presenta a sus dos protagonistas centrales. Desde estas primeras páginas de “La Isla de Oro”, percibimos que la estructura de la narración y su hilo argumental se ciñen al relato de viajes, muy de acuerdo a la tradición inaugurada en el siglo XIX por el romanticismo y que tanta fascinación ejerce sobre los modernistas. Darío eligió, seguramente, su propio viaje como tema narrativo influido por esa misma tradición literaria, por otro lado muy familiar en la isla. Rubén pudo conocer sus ejemplos más notables durante su estancia y se fijó en el más famoso de ellos: “Un hiver à Majorque”. El relato de George Sand, que aparte de inspirarle la idea general de la narración, le sirve también como material literario tanto de esta novela como de la siguiente. De esta forma, “La isla de Oro” posee las características propias de un género híbrido, en el que se confunde la novela, el diario intimista y la crónica de viajes. Se trata, en realidad, como condesan los propios personajes de una divagación literaria que nace sobre la marcha del propio viaje y por su necesidad ineludible de escribir las crónicas para “La Nación”.
